The makers of the upcoming Department were worried about what the censor board would be doing with the film, especially with the recent tightening of major films, including statutory warnings being flashed during songs. However, surprising everyone, Department has been passed with no major cuts, and has been granted an “A” certificate. The only exception is that a major song of the film has been ordered to be deleted by the censor board. The song speaks explicitly to the politics and the workings of the police department. The lyrics go something like this, “[l]aal batti aati hai, sab kip hat jaati hai, Mumbai police hai sab ka bhai” (translation: when the red light comes, everyone gets scared, the Mumbai police is everyone’s ‘bhai’). The Regional Officer, Mr. J.P. Singh felt that the song shed negative light on the police department in general, and specifically, was defamatory toward the police force of Mumbai. The other viewpoint is of Ram Gopal Verma who vehemently opposed this decision made by the Censor Board.
Censor clears Department with 'A' certificate. All things aside, the film is to be released this week!
